I've been pretty preoccupied cleaning out our basement over the past couple of weeks, and I'm still at least a few days away from actually finishing this hellish project. Since moving into our house almost four years ago, we've managed to fill our basement with lots of random things. I added to the chaos when I brought home boxes and boxes of stuff from my parents' house when they sold it. While organizing the cluster that is our basement, I realized it was half way through July and I hadn't even started thinking about my July list of favorites. Fortunately, this list came easy.
Books. I'm finishing up The Mended Heart Bible Study, and I recently read most of The Girl on the Train (After waiting on the library wait list for two months, I apparently only had two weeks to finish the book...which I did not. I couldn't renew it and had to return it to avoid a late fee. Whatever. I'm not bitter about it. I just never got to finish the book and refuse to buy a book I've already read half of. It's the principal, but I digress.), and can't wait to read the new Harper Lee book.
I rescued this Tory Burch bag from the trash when I worked at a resale shop several years ago. It was in pretty bad shape, but after running it through the washing machine it looked brand new. It's been my go-to pool bag ever since.
I always use straws. Like, for every drink. So I love these neon straws for summer.
I'm not much of a hat person. I rarely wear them, and when I do I feel silly. I haven't bought a new hat in years, but when I saw this one at Target the other day I decided to give hats another go. I think this will be a great hat to wear on our upcoming beach trip.
We've taken Katherine to two movies over the past couple of weeks. It's actually a perfect activity when the temperatures outside are 90s+. Every morning Katherine asks if we're going back to the movie theater. The girl loves her some movies.
I love this July weather. If it's not storming/raining, it's either 65 degress or 112. At least there's no snow.

Katherine and I are fresh off of a road trip to Arkansas with my mom to see my grandmothers. It's always a long trip, but the strong storms and heavy downpours made it that much longer. I always love getting see my grandmothers and my Aunt Rita, and now Katherine loves seeing them too. While we were there Katherine performed two "shows" a day, determined to entertain anyone who would pay attention. She colored princess pictures with my Aunt Rita and played catch with my Granny Lu. She hid my Granny Dorothy's domino collection in random spots around her house and also noticed the striking resemblance between her Uncle Zach and my Uncle Joey. One morning, my mom and I took her out to Jacksonport State Park, where she played and threw rocks into the river. It's almost like a mini-vacation. Almost.
I often forget about the extreme humidity and mosquitoes that reside in Arkansas. My hair did some crazy things while we were there and Katherine added to her bug bite collection on her legs, which made my Granny Dorothy have anxiety. I'm always ready leave when I'm visiting my grandmothers, but sad once I've left. I'm already ready to plan another trip to see them. Maybe we should fly next time. And go in the winter.

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July! With Jason working during the day this year, we were able to spend most of the afternoon together at my parents' house. Our 4th was pretty low key, with our traditional red, white, and blue breakfast, a kiddie pool, slip n' slide, food, sparklers, golf cart rides, and no nap. We didn't even make it to an actual fireworks display, due to our exhaustion from the day itself. We did, however, see lots of fireworks displays on our drive back home that night.
To avoid being too wordy, here's our holiday in photos:
We spent Sunday recovering from a super fun day, and preparing for the week ahead. I still can't believe it's July already. This summer is flying by!

We've been busy enjoying the summer time together around here lately. I always try really really hard not to make summertime a busy time, so we've been taking it easy, playing outside (in between storms and rain), swimming (mostly indoors), visiting local attractions, and watching movies. So there's our life update. Not a lot to actually update right now, but changes they are a comin'.
Annnnnnyway, I was browsing my 4th of July Pinterest board the other day and remembered all of the fantastic pins I had pinned throughout the year to make during the 4th. Because I like to bake pies, I decided to make this American Flag Pie (I had originally decided to name this post "American Pie," but Jason Biggs has officially ruined those two words for me for all of eternity) for the 4th of July this year.
This pie is nothing new, especially in the Pinterest world, so I used this recipe.
I used store bought pie crusts with cherry, strawberry, and blueberry pie fillings. I added about half a cup of fresh strawberries to the cherry/strawberry filling mixture and about half a cup of fresh blueberries to the blueberry pie filling. After putting the prepared pie crust in the pie pan, I squared off a section for the "stars" with foil. I filled each portion with the appropriate filling, then removed the foil. I cut stars with a cookie cutter and stripes with a pie crust cutter. I baked the pie at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, then turned the oven down to 375 and baked for another 45 minutes. (I did place foil over the edges of the pie for most of the baking and took it off when there was 15 minutes left to bake. I also placed the pie pan on a baking sheet in the oven to keep it from over flowing and burning in the oven.) Overall, a Pinterest win!
You got that 9 to 5 But, baby, so do I So don't be thinking I'll be home and baking apple pies.......
(which was exactly what I was doing when Jason got home from work this afternoon)
I hope everyone has a super fun and safe 4th of July weekend! Happy Birthday America!
